The film is a sequel to the 1987 Academy Award-winning film "Wall Street." Set in New York City, the film takes place 21 years after the original, revolving around the 2008 financial crisis. Michael Douglas reprises his role as Gordon Gekko in the film.
The film is set in June 2008. Gordon Gekko has just been released from the prison and is ready to replunge himself into the business war. However, he realizes soon that he is out of touch, and becomes aware that the current Wall Street is greedier and more dangerous than the one at his time. He attempts to warn Wall Street of the imminent economic downturn and stock market crash, but no one believes him. Gekko decides to rebuild a relationship with his estranged daughter Winnie (Carey Mulligan). Due to their time apart, and the fact that Winnie blames Gekko for her brother Rudy's suicide, she avoids any contact with him.
At the same time, the mentor of young Wall Street trader Jacob Moore unexpectedly dies, and Jacob suspects his hedge fund manager Bretton James (Josh Brolin) of being involved in the death. Seeking revenge, he asks Gekko for help, and in exchange he will help Gekko reconcile with his daughter. Jacob, who is Winnie's fiancé, is played by Shia LaBeouf, the leading actor of the blockbuster series "Transformers".
The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this May, and is set to be released theatrically in North America on September 24. To Chinese audiences, the most interesting thing is the number of Chinese elements that are mixed in the film. "China", "RMB", "cooperating with the Chinese merchants" and "giving presents to the Chinese representatives in the negotiations" are phrases frequently heard from the film. Even Zhang Xin, the CEO of SOHO China and wife of Pan Shiyi, plays a role as a Chinese merchant representative in the sequel.
Besides this one, other three foreign films "Shrek Forever After," "The Expendables," and "The Last Airbender" will hit Chinese cinemas in August. "Inception" and "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" will respectively launch on big screens on September 2 and September 9. "Resident Evil: Afterlife" which stars Wentworth Miller, the leading actor of hit TV drama "Prison Break", might be brought into China in September as well.
