Recent growth in the Chinese publishing sector has attracted those in the international publishing world, with a forum Sunday in Beijing identifying future market opportunities.

Speaking at the 2010 Beijing International Publishing Forum, Wang Zhongwei, vice minister of the State Council Information Office, said that market opportunities in China include at least four aspects: readers, authors, Chinese subjects and the cooperation of publishing agencies in China.

Liu Binjie, minister of the General Administration of Press and Publication, added that in the post-financial crisis era, China is becoming increasingly significant to international publishers, with almost all major international publishing groups now having representative offices in China.

He said that in the five years prior to the financial crisis, 40 percent of books exported from UK publishers went to Europe, but both Europe and US markets have since stalled.

Post-crisis UK book sales to the Chinese mainland rose 44 percent to $34.3 million during this time, according to Liu, outnumbering for the first time the exports to Hong Kong at $26.1 million and Taiwan at $13.7 million.
