Hong Kong residents will have the chance to get a different view of a highly renowned piece of Chinese painting dating back some 900 years ago, as an exhibition of the animated version of the Riverside Scene at the Qingming Festival opens on Monday at Asia World-Expo.

The original painting, the only work left by China's Song Dynasty painter Zhang Zeduan, depicts the prosperous scenes along a river in the then capital city at the Qingming Festival, which falls in late spring.

To vividly illustrate the commercial activities depicted in the painting, the animated version has specially created night scenery. The scene is portrayed in day-to-night cycles lasting four minutes, with a dramatic interplay of light and color.

To help viewers better understand the significance of the painting, organizers of the exhibition will also offer lectures on Chinese culture and art, and provide information about the conception and production of the animated version.

The show will run until Nov. 29 and is expected to attract nearly one million viewers.

The multimedia scroll painting had been on display at the China Pavilion of the Shanghai Expo and impressed millions of viewers from both at home and abroad.
