The new stage play "Rou Ruan" ("Soft") directed by Meng Jinghui premiered Wednesday at Poly Theater in Beijing, Sina.com.cn reports.

The 90-minute play was written by Meng's wife, Liao Yimei, starring actors Hao Lei, Robert Fan Zhiwei and Jim Chim Sui-Man, each of whom plays two roles. The play is about a love story between a female doctor and a young man.

Audience feedback after the performance was generally positive. Many theatergoers said they thought the dialogues in the play were straightforward and hit their hearts directly, according to the report.

Beijing-based Meng Jinghui is one of China's most influential directors in the country's avant-garde theater scene. His plays employ many techniques rarely used onstage to impress audiences both visually and emotionally.

"Rou Ruan" is the last play in Meng's "Pessimism" trilogy. The other two plays in the trilogy are "Rhinoceros in Love" and "Amber."
