Oscar-nominated cinematographer Zhao Xiaoding was in Beijing last week, selecting equipment for his new project. He took time out to talk with the Global Times about working with legendary director Zhang Yimou, his life behind the lens and his Academy Award nomination.

Preparing for location in Nanjing for Zhang Yimou's new film Jin Ling Shi San Chai (The 13 Women of Nanjing), Zhao's collaboration with Zhang has now spanned more than 10 years.

"It's easy to communicate with Zhang, since he was initially a cinematographer himself. Zhang gives me a lot of trust and flexibility, which is how all of the beautiful cinematography can happen," Zhao explained.

Working as director of photography (DP) with Zhang on some of his most important works including the Beijing Olympic Games and 2010 World Expo in Shanghai application films, Zhao is known for his solid and creative cinematography.
