Senegal hosts global black arts festival

The third edition of the Global Black Arts Festival (FESMAN) was opened on Friday night by Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade in the presence of his counterparts from Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea and Mauritania.
The opening ceremony was held at Leopold Sedar Senghor stadium, featuring spectacular performances of hundreds of dancers, musicians and artists.
American, Jamaican, Brazilian, Senegalese and African stars then made presentations before thousands of people who had turned up during the opening ceremony. The stars included Youssou Ndour, Angelique Kidjo, Ismael Lo and Akon.
The festival, which is expected to end on Dec. 31, is expected to attract more than 200,000 participants from 80 countries.
Music concerts will be offered in different areas of Dakar and regional capitals.
Two art villages with the capacity to hold 2,400 people were constructed in the districts of Almadies and Ngor to receive the visitors.
The first FESMAN was organized in Dakar in April 1966 by Senegal's first president Leopold Sedar Senghor. The second was held in Nigeria in 1977.
