Annick Geille, a female writer from France, meanwhile questioned the concept of "feminist writing" and expressed the view that gender difference is overemphasized.

"Writers should be free of gender divergence. As a woman, I can also feel the emotion of my male roles," she said, adding that in the information age, no writer is avant-garde.

She said the gender issue has made no progress in decades and only when writers focus on content rather than form can they find a new voice and strength.

Fang Fang, president of the Hubei Writers Association, said there were more women writers in China, and many write more skillfully, but believed they have given up their independence and rebellious spirits by "shamelessly" exposing their lust and desire, such as being an ernai (mistress).

But she conceded that she could understand women's survival as being a hardship for a disadvantaged sex, which is the reason behind their longing for wealth, and called for the change of the social environment to prevent this.

Finally, Wu Yiqin, president of NMMCL, said Chinese writers are often undervalued in the conversation with the West, and Westerners read their works from a viewpoint of political ideology rather than literature itself. "We write literature, and the West read something behind it," he lamented.

"Of course, we can't sort out everything in one conversation," Wu added, saying "We've made important progress this time, so writers from both countries can find common and eternal values of literature by sharing inspiring insights."
