Veteran female photographer Gao Yuan, well-known for shooting many of China's biggest bands and singers from the mid-1990s to early 2000s, will host an exhibition expected to feature dozens of unpublished works this year, revealing a more subtle and personal side of China's rock and roll musicians.

The exhibition, details of which are still under discussion, is expected to be held in May and to coincide with a certain music festival.
"There seems to be a revival of rock and roll in China and a lot of people are interested, with a large number of activities being held," Gao, who is now also an accessory designer and owns her own brand, said. "I'd also like to have these old photos published because they are about my life and my friends. I hope people nowadays can get to know what the rock scene was like in the past," she explained.
Gao started taking her rock snaps at 19 and has shot almost all the major rock bands and musicians of China over the 20 years of her career, including Dou Wei, Xu Wei and Tang Dynasty. Her marriage to Dou in 2002, one of China's most creative rock musicians, broke up two years later and attracted huge media attention.
"I don't like to [just] take photos of [musicians] during their big shows, just to show their fresh and bright side, as it cannot represent everything. Instead I like to take photos of them relaxing backstage, sending text messages or having meals," Gao said. Most of the photos to be on shown depict such ordinary yet intimate images and should bring music lovers closer to an age now "out of reach" for a lot of people nowadays, Gao believes.
