Contemporary dance drama Behind 3.0, the latest production from Beijing's SMX Studio, will be staged at 9 Theater in Beijing from Thursday to Sunday.

The 110-minute work is an adaptation of Chinese filmmaker Lou Ye's Spring Fever, which was awarded Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009. The protagonist, a private investigator, is hired to spy on a man who is having a gay affair. However, he is drawn into the affair and gets involved in a love triangle with the man's boyfriend and his own girlfriend.

Hoping to give viewers a new perspective on love via controversial aspects of homosexuality and infidelity, the work took the creators more than a year to finish.

The piece is meant to explore the way physical movements represent the script's thematic elements, according to director and SMX Studio co-founder Xie Shu.

"It's a love story and a story about choices," Xie said. "Sometimes with desire we feel that we don't have any choice in the matter, so we'd rather simply get rid of that option rather than process it and accept it fully."
