Drug abuse has been prevalent for a long time in show business. Despite this, the dangers of drug abuse and the influence of celebrity behavior on the general public have been downplayed by the media. Recent developments, however, may help reverse this trend.

Following the arrest of Chinese actors Coco Sun and Max Mok in Beijing on April 15, there has been intense speculation in the media that Sun had fingered up to 30 other celebrities involved in drug trafficking to Beijing police in order to receive a lighter sentence. The list was rumored to contain the names of four best actor winners, as well as other notable directors and popular actors, actresses and singers. Although it will likely be detrimental to some of these stars’ careers, hopefully the renewed media attention will call attention to the many dangers of drug abuse.

Celebrity behavior is more closely watched than normal people. Celebrities have large groups of fans and great public appeal, and some fans adore them blindly. As public figures, they have more responsibility to serve as good role models for society. In that sense, it is unforgivable for artists to consider drug taking a tool for their inspiration.

Drugs are escapist, dangerous, unpredictable and addictive. Drug users develop increasing erratic behavior, delusions, and detachment from society. Long-term addiction can lead to serious health problems and death.

Public figures who take drugs can never be treated with kid gloves. A purification of the show biz industry is needed to strengthen the morals of our nation’s children and encourage them to follow the right path.
