Pop singer Wakin Chau is sending a present to his female audiences - a new album that extols women as blossoming flowers.

The long-standing Mandopop star will release "Huadan" ("Wakin Chau Diva" in English) on May 20. The album is a cover work of 12 hit songs by several generations of female singing stars, from 1930s singing queen Zhou Xuan to the present-day pop diva Faye Wong.

The name of the album is taken from a type of Peking opera performers, huadan, which is usually sung by women. But there have been some outstanding male huadan as well. The best-known one was Mei Lanfang.

In his album, Chau has devoted a track to Mei Lanfang, and has invited Hu Wenge, Mei's third-generation disciple, for the duet. The song, called "Women Are Flowers", praises the beauty of women in a fusion of pop and Peking opera.

Chau is planning to promote the album with a show on June 4 at the Taipei Arena.

The singer has been in the limelight for nearly three decades. Many of his songs have become classics.
