Many publishers and readers were drawn to the China International Publishing Group's (CIPG) stand at the 63rd Frankfurt Book Fair, which opened on October 12. With its beautiful books in many languages, the elegant design of its exhibition hall and professional arrangement of its stand, CIPG offered foreign readers another chance to "Experience China".

Publishers and readers were also drawn to the book release ceremony of the English-language version of Why and How the CPC Works in China, a book designed to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

English version of Why and How the CPC Works in China

The New Class Press bought the English-language version copyright of Why and How the CPC Works in China from the New World Press and published the book in English, CIPG's executive vice president Guo Xiaoyong said at the book release ceremony.

This book is an attempt to give the world an in-depth insight of both China and the CPC. It gives readers a unique angle through "discussing thoughts with stories and "letting others comment". Further to this, it answers several important questions of common concern both at home and abroad and also brings the CPC's history alive in both words and pictures, telling readers all about the CPC's glorious experience in vivid yet simple language.

The book cites the opinions and comments of many famous Chinese and foreign personnel and media, making it an objective and balanced work. It helps domestic readers to broaden their outlook, and also appeals to foreign readers, in terms of both their reading habits and interests. There is no question that the book became a hot topic at its release ceremony.

Reporters, along with honorable guests from the publishing industry, attended the book release ceremony. The honorable guests included Li Xin, Minister Counselor, Head of Cultural Department of the Chinese Embassy in Berlin, Germany, Ma Yansheng, counselor for Education and Culture at the Chinese Mission to the European Union, Chen Yingming, deputy director-general of the Department of Foreign Communication and Cooperation of the General Administration of Press and Publication, Claudia Kaiser, VP of business development of the Frankfurt Book Fair, Stella Chou, managing director of China business development for HarperCollins Publishers, Jo Lusby, General Manager of Penguin China and Herman P. Spruijt, President of International Publishers Association.

CIPG will also hold a seminar on this book and will donate a number of copies to the Museum Karl Marx Haus in Trier, hometown of Karl Marx, co-founder of Marxism.

CIPG brought nearly 900 titles to the book fair this year. 90 percent of the books on display were published in foreign languages. In all, 600 titles were published in English, 40 in German, 20 in French, and 70 others in Russian, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, Korean and Indonesian.

These books, covering a wide range of topics on modern China, Chinese culture, Chinese literature, Chinese language teaching, traditional Chinese medicine, as well as children's books, give foreign readers a panoramic view of modern China.

This is the 31st time that CIPG has participated in the Frankfurt Book Fair.

CIPG is the first and largest foreign-language publishing and distribution organization in China. It annually publishes 3,000 titles in over 40 languages, including 24 types of printed periodicals in nine languages. It also operates over 30 websites, including China.org.cn. It distributes its books and periodicals in 180 countries and regions. Its publications account for more than half of China's exports of books and periodicals.

Another highlight is the application of new media and new technology, such as digital publications and mobile reading. CIPG has increased investment and research in digital publishing. At the CIPG stand, readers had the chance to look at China.org.cn, the Beijing Review, China Pictorial, and China Today on the iPad, as well as e-books such as Why and How the CPC Works in China on the amazon.com website. Reporters and readers alike experienced CIPG's digital products, including its multi-language periodical and picture databases. CIPG's application of new technologies will constantly change in order to meet the reading demands and habits of people from all walks of life.

The Frankfurt Book Fair is famous for its copyright trade. CIPG holds over 100 copyright negotiations and closes several copyright export deals each year at the Frankfurt Book Fair. As one of China's major international publishing groups, CIPG leads the country's copyright exports each year.

Over 7,500 publishing companies from around the world, including 200 Chinese companies, attended the book fair.
