A pair of PG-13 films overperformed in North America over the Super Bowl weekend, with each grossing over 20 million U.S. dollars in ticket sales which became the first movies that have debuted above that threshold for the three-day frame which culminates in an iconic Super Bowl face- off in Indianapolis in midwestern America.

"Chronicle", a 20th Century Fox sci-fi actioner about a high schooler who used his newly-gained superhuman abilities for darker purposes in confrontation with a group of friends, is projected to sell 22 million dollars in ticket stubs, which makes it the No. 1 film during the box office derby.

The film, which costs Fox 12 million dollars to make, is a heavily male-skewed piece. Sixty-one percent of the audience was younger than 25 who gave the film a "B+" CinemaScore rating. The movie got an overall "B" from moviegoers, according to CinemaScore.

"The Woman In Black", a CBS films thriller based on Susan Hill' s 1983 novel about a menacing spectre that haunts a small English town, came in the second with an estimated 21 million dollars in admission tickets. The movie stars "Harry Potter" lead actor Daniel Radcliffe, who turned out to be a big draw which helped the film to gain momentum in the leadup to premiere.

Comparing to "Chronicle", the thriller skewed toward female moviegoers. As much as 59 percent of those who have watched the film was female. And the film also appeals to young audiences, with those younger than 25 making up 57 percent.

The two releases have turned out to be the highest-opening films over the Super Bowl weekend which has traditionally been a weak period for box office, upset studio expectations which looked to gross less than half of that much.

Liam Neeson's latest vehicle "The Grey", which was the No. 1 film last weekend, was relegated to third place in its second week of exhibition, garnering estimated 9.5 million dollars for a running total of 34.8 million dollars.

"Big Miracle", another film which opened over the weekend, was in fourth slot which took in 8.5 million dollars, a less than impressive performance for a 40 million dollar film. The Universal family drama starring Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski centers on a 1988 international effort to rescue gray whales trapped in ice in Alaska.

Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies in the United States and Canada this weekend are "Underworld Awakening" (5.6 million dollars), "One For The Money" (5.2 million dollars), "Red Tails" ( 5 million dollars), "The Descendants" (4.5 million dollars), "Man On A Ledge" (4.5 million dollars), and "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" (3.9 million dollars).
