Even before Thursday night's opening ceremony in Berlin, a significant number for the festival's competition films have been swept up by Asian distributors.
Angelina Jolie's "In the Land of Blood and Honey", sold by GK Films was picked up by DDDream for Mainland China, by Tomson International Entertainment Distribution Ltd for Hong Kong and by PT Parkit Film for both Indonesia and The Philippines.
Danish film "A Royal Affair", by Nickolaj Arcel, and represented by TrustNordisk sold to Madman Entertainment for Australia and New Zealand and to Lens Media for China.
Steven Soderbergh's thriller "Haywire", which plays out of competition and is sold by Mandate International, claimed a large number of sales. Starring Gina Carano, Antonio Banderas and the red hot Michael Fassbender, the film has already opened in several Asian territories. It was sold to Village Roadshow Pictures for Australia and New Zealand, to Fundamental Films for Mainland China, to Deltamac (HK) Co Ltd for Hong Kong, to Tanweer for India, to PT Amero Mitra for Indonesia; to Culture Publishers Inc for Japan, Soundspace/PT Parkit for Malaysia, to Pioneer Films for The Philippines; to Golden Village Pictures Pte Ltd for Singapore, to Catchplay Inc for Taiwan and Sahamongkolfilm International Co Ltd for Thailand.
A big pre-seller, which will start shooting in a couple of months is Formula One action-drama Rush, to be directed by Ron Howard and star Australia's Chris Hemsworth and Germany's Daniel Bruehl. It has claimed licence deals in Australia and New Zealand with Entertainment One, in Mainland China with Leeding Media; in Hong Kong with Golden Scene Co Ltd ; in India and Pakistan with Apsara; in Indonesia with PT Amero Mitra; in Malaysia with Media Film Intl; in Singapore with Cathay-Keris Films Pte Ltd; in South Korea with Noori Pictures; in Taiwan with Lots Home Entertainment Co Ltd and in Thailand and Vietnam with Media Film Intl.
