Nine samba troupes paraded down Rio's sambadrome stadium vying for a spot in Sunday and Monday night's infamous parades which will attract a 70,000 strong crowd.

Each Samba school has its own brilliant costumes and is lead by a Queen dressed in little more than a huge plumed headdress and a pair of high heels.

The dancers perform on tall decorated floats to the sound of thundering drum beats.

The carnival, considered to the largest in the world, continues until Wednesday which marks the start of the lenten period on the Christian calendar.

Two million people per day hit the streets during the Festival, which has a history that dates back nearly 300 years.
