Four Asian film masters displayed their micro movies at the 36th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF), chinesefilms.cn reports.
Mainland director Gu Changwei, Hong Kong director Ann Hui, Taiwanese director Cai Mingliang and South Korean director Kim Taeyong all made their micro movie debuts at a press conference on March 22, along with other film elites such as director Zhang Yan.
The movies were produced by the largest online video company on the mainland, Youku. The four installments will be edited into one feature film entitled "Beautiful 2012" and will be sent to this year's Cannes International Film Festival.
Ann Hui, winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Sixth Asian Film Awards, was absent from the event due to her busy schedule. Her work, called "My Way," focused on the transgender community, featuring a lead character who hopes to fulfill his dream of becoming a woman. The flick will be Ann's first production after the art-house film "A Simple Life."
Cai continued his unique style in "Pedestrian", a film with no dialogue. Kim's film deals with social issues and concentrates on a boy who rents a girlfriend to please his ill father.
Mr. Jacob Wang, inspector-general of the Hong Kong-Asian Film Financing Forum, said he didn't plan to make the quartet into online movies. "Then we learned about Youku. Releasing movies on the Internet is a totally new creative experience for us. You would never reach 400 million viewers in the cinemas," he said.
Director Gu Changwei also stated that micro movies will be a new trend for domestic filmmakers in the future.
