The face is possibly the most important part of our body; clearly expressing our moods, wishes and desires. When the face is recorded and enlarged, appearing within portrait photography, such images are meant to establish a connection with the viewer; an approach being utilized by "Face Contact Beijing".

As part of the PHotoEspa?a 2011 exhibition, "Face Contact" echoed the theme of the photography festival —"Interfaces, Portrait and Communication". The "Face Contact" exhibition was considered a "flagship" exposition for the entire event; showcasing a broad and free perspective on the theme. The exhibition has now come to China and is currently on show at the Iberia Art Center, located in Beijing's 798 art district.

"The aim of the exhibition is not only to attract art professionals, but to exchange and interact with the general audiences as well," Gerardo Mosquera, art critic and general curator of PHotoEspa?a said at the opening of the exhibit on Saturday, April 28.

According to Gerardo, "the face is our principal physical identifying feature, as well as a communication machine. No other part of the body is capable of expressing moods, wishes, and desires so clearly. Photography captures and represents that information effectively, but it also processes the face to articulate other messages. Thus, the communication inherent to the face depends in part on the effects created and conveyed through photography; be it artistic, documentary, identificatory or some other approach. Face contact establishes a connection with the viewer's face, engaging in dialogue or proving to be tense and contradictory".

The portraits in this exhibition subvert the normal conventions by exploring the flexibility and expansion of photography. The exhibition gathers the works of 30 artists from all over the world in different media including photographs and videos.
