Shortly after striding down Cannes' glamorous red carpet, Anderson and his star-studded cast declared the festival officially open at its opening ceremony Wednesday night.
The ceremony was hosted by Berenice Bejo, who starred in "The Artist". Also in attendance were Jane Fonda, Eva Longoria, Lana Del Rey and Alec Baldwin.
Meanwhile, British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, dressed as his latest alter ego General Aladeen, was causing chaos at the nearby Croisette promenade, where he rode around on a camel.
A jury of nine, presided over by Nanni Moretti, will spend the next 12 days sifting through the 22 in-competition entries as to decide who shall receive the festival's top award, the prestigious Palme d'Or.
