"Chaipan" will be directed by Japanese director Ryuji Otsuka, based on a script co-written by Otsuka and his Chinese wife Huang Ji. It is a family drama partially based on the experiences of Otsuka bringing his then girlfriend Huang to Japan in order to meet his parents.
When the couple visited Otsuka's parents in Japan, Otsuka's parents allowed them to stay in their house for one night only. After that, the couple had to find other places to stay, leaving Huang depressed and angry. Otsuka explained that it was not because his estranged parents did not like her, but because they could not stand the thought of sharing a room for more than one night in the already small house.
Otsuka said: "The incident enabled me to better understand my family. Being apart from them for a long time created a divide between them and myself. They began to treat me like a guest and hold negative things away from me." The incident featured in the movie also forced him to stand up to his family, he added.
Co-writer Huang Ji said: "Although the story draws from our personal experiences, it reflects the difficulties that modern young people face as well as the hopes they hold for life. It also suggests that girls should use their good judgment to deal with relationships."
Unlike their last award-winning collaboration "Egg and Stone," which Huang wrote, directed, and Otsuka produced, shot and edited, "Chaipan" will be a studio production aiming for a wide release and using professional actors. Otsuka said that the film, set for release next year, would be shot on location in Japan's Tokyo, Kyoto and several other cities.
In addition, Huang revealed that she was now developing a script for the second feature of her planned "Countryside Trilogy", following the first well-received film "Egg and Stone," which won a Tiger Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in February. The film will explore the feelings and emotions of countryside girls who were left behind in their hometowns by their urban job seeking parents, she added.
