Hong Kong action-movie star Jackie Chan has joined forces with UNICEF to combat child trafficking in Myanmar. Chan who also serves as a Goodwill Ambassador for the U.N. Children’s Fund is on a three day visit to raise awareness of child trafficking in the country.

On Saturday, the Hollywood star visited a vocational training centre for trafficked children who have managed to return home, but require support from youth centres that are supported by UNICEF. According to the U.N. an estimated 1.2 million children are trafficked worldwide every year under a multi-million dollar criminal network that exposes children to physical and emotional abuse.

Speaking to journalists at a news conference later, Chan called for a shift in the media’s attention away from celebrity gossip to humanitarian issues.
