"Painted Skin: The Resurrection" has become the highest-grossing domestic movie after making about 685 million yuan (US$107.1 million) since it hit cinemas on June 28, Mtime.com reports.
The top two spots of the highest-grossing domestic movies once belonged to Jiang Wen's "Let the Bullets Fly" (676.6 million yuan) and Feng Xiaogang's "Aftershock" (673.3 million yuan).
After four weeks of screening, "Painted Skin: The Resurrection" has successfully bumped off those two blockbusters and taken first place.
The news brought mixed reactions with some describing it "perverse" for a movie that only screens in 3-D format.
The movie also has lower scores than "Let the Bullets Fly" on movie-rating Web sites and the director Wuershan is not popular with Chinese audiences.
