"Resident Evil: Retribution" turned out to be the top grossing film during the three-day weekend, roping in 21.1 million U.S. dollars in ticket sales to lead a better box office weekend in North America.

The fifth installment on the Sony/Screen Gems sci-fi thriller debuted in 3,012 venues in the United States and Canada, with 48 percent of its opening coming from 3-D and 14 percent from IMAX, according to preliminary statistics released by Sony.

The numbers are well in line with its proceeding entries. The first installment "Resident Evil: Afterlife" taking in 26 million dollars, the highest for any "Resident Evil" films since 2002.

The R-rated flick, which is adapted from the Capcom survival horror video game of the same name, appeals mainly to male moviegoers who comprises 64 percent of those who has seen it, while 45 percent was under 25 years old. However, it has failed to win over a majority of audience, receiving a "C+" CinemaScore rating.

Opening in No. 2 is the 3-D re-release of Disney/Pixar's " Finding Nemo," garnering 17.5 million dollars over the weekend. " Possession," a Lionsgate exorcism flick which remained atop the box office chart for the last fortnight, slipped to third slot over the three-day frame with 5.8 million dollars. It is on pace for a 41.2 million dollar total during 17 days in exhibition.

"Lawless," the Weinstein prohibition-era Western, is on pace for a 4.2 million dollar weekend, finishing in No. 4. Rounding out the top five in the North America box office this weekend is " ParaNorman," which is estimated to roll up three million dollars for a 49.3 million dollar four-week total.

Anti-Obama documentary "2016: Obama's America" is projected for a two million dollar frame, finishing outside the top 10.

Overall, the North American box office is well on track to gross 80 million dollars over the weekend, representing a better period than last week which saw a mere 68 million dollar business.
