"Caught in the Web," director Chen Kaige's first contemporary drama, has been selected as the mainland's contender in the Best Foreign Language Film category at next year's Academy Awards, the Beijing News reports.

The news was confirmed by an official at the Film Bureau of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT).

According to the Academy's regulations, competing films must be released in commercial cinemas between October 1, 2011 and September 30, 2012, and screened for more than seven days.

Director Feng Xiaogang's famine-themed blockbuster "Back to 1942" will not be able to compete for an Academy Award, as it will not be released until the end of November.

Hong Kong's contender for the Best Foreign Language Film award will be Johnny To's crime "Life without Principle," while Taiwan's contender will be "Touch of the Light."

The nomination list for the 85th Academy Awards will be announced on January 15, 2013.
