Disaster thriller "Bait 3D" has almost taken 150 million yuan (US$24 million) at the Chinese box office since its release on October 12.

The film's Chinese producer Yunnan Film Group (YFG) announced news of the takings late Wednesday.

The film is about a tsunami in Oceania. Sharks then attack tourists and aid teams from China help rescue a group of ballet dancers.

Zhang Lun, president with the YFG said the film surpassed 100 million yuan during the first 10 days, and the 4D release for Halloween had helped the film to hit new heights.

Chen Lianbao, president with the China Film Stellar Theater Chain, said theaters would continue to screen the movie. "As of October 31, the film has been shown more than 180,000 times with 3.5 million people having seen it," he said.

"Bait 3D", co-filmed in China, the U.S. and Australia, is directed by Kimble Rendall, the executive director of the Matrix series. The 3D techniques are made by the same producing group that worked on "Avatar".

Russell Mulcahy is the film's screenwriter, who has also directed "Resident Evil: Extinction" and "The Scorpion King 2".
