Renowned Chinese artist Li Moran died Thursday in Beijing at the age of 85.

The artist's son Li Longyin told Xinhua via telephone that his father, the honorary chairman of Chinese Dramatists Association and honorary president of Liaoning People's Art Theater, died at the Beijing Hospital.

Born in December 1927 in Shangzhi county of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, Li Moran started his performing career in 1947.

He won nationwide fame for playing the role of a patriotic general in film "the Naval Battle of 1894 (between China and Japan)" in 1962.

He featured in more than 60 plays in his whole career and was awarded the lifetime achievement award of the top-level Magnolia Stage Performance Award in 2007.
