Oscar-nominated actress Jessica Chastain has dominated the weekend's North American box office takings, with her two new films topping the charts.

Chastain's low-budget horror film "Mama" had a US$28.1-million debut to put it in the top spot.

The supernatural thriller follows Chastain's character and her husband as they take in their orphaned nieces, whose father murdered their mother and fled to the woods.

Oscar favorite "Zero Dark Thirty", up for Best Picture and Best Actress for Chastain, came in at second, with fellow Oscar contender "Silver Linings Playbook" at third.

Actors Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe's new crime thriller "Broken City" and the star-studded mafia film "Gangster Squad" rounded out the top five.

Meanwhile, Arnold Schwarzenegger's hyped up new film "The Last Stand" had a grim opening, only earning just over US$6 million for tenth place.
