Beatles collaborator Tony Sheridan has died over the weekend at the age of 72.

The musician was best known as an early collaborator with The Beatles in the 1960s.

The Beatles played as a backing band to Sheridan on a cover of 'My Bonnie' in 1961.

He was the only non-Beatle to be the lead singer on a Beatles track which charted as a single.

He is also known to have introduced the band to American R&B records, which became a big influence on the group's early career.

Sheridan was incorrectly reported to have died while performing for American troops during the Vietnam War, after some members of his band were killed by enemy fire.

His last album titled Vagabond was released in 2002, while 1961 records with The Beatles have received reissues over the years.

Sheridan was living with his wife Anna and his musician son Tony Sheridan Jr from an earlier marriage.
