Professor Wang Xiaojun puts his words into action and gives the audience a sneak peek at his moves, all gently and elegantly executed of course, on March 25, 2013. |
"Tai Chi should be an artistic pleasure."
Tai Chi is a special school and traditional form of Chinese martial arts, with different schools created by Chen, Yang, Wu, Wuu and Sun respectively. The Chen and Yang Schools are known to be the most influential ones in China itself. Currently, over 150 million people across the globe are practicing Tai Chi in more than 150 countries and regions, 70 of which now feature their own organizations for the ancient sport.
In spite of their unique gestures and styles, all abovementioned Tai Chi schools share significant overlaps in regards to what they require of the practitioner, i.e. staying calm and relaxed, coordinating mind, gestures and breathing, maintaining slow and gentle movements and shifting the bodyweight-center (for example from one leg onto the other). In general, the sport incorporates breathing techniques with classical Chinese philosophy and TCM theories. As Wang explained during his lecture, three aspects dominate the whole process of attaining the goal of both internal and external physical maintenance, i.e. movement, breathing and mind-control.
