Country singer and songwriter Taylor Swift won eight awards at the annual Billboard Music Awards held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Swift became the night's biggest winner, collecting eight awards - Artist of the Year, Top Female Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Country Artist and Top Digital Song Artist.

The album "Red" (2012), which sold 3.7 million, won the Top Billboard 200 Album award and Top Country Album award, while her chart-topping single "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" won the Top Country Song award.

"Thank you for making my music the soundtrack to your crazy emotions," said Taylor Swift. "You are the longest and best relationship I have had."

Nicki Minaj won the Top Rap Artist award, defeating Drake, Flo Rida, Pitbull and Psy. The award was presented to Minaj by the country diva Shania Twain.

Madonna won the Top Touring Artist award with her "MDNA Tour".

"A showgirl needs her fans," said Madonna while thanking the more than 2.2 million fans who attended her 88 shows. "Thank you for supporting me for three decades."

Two other big winners were Gotye with his single "Somebody That I Used To Know," which had 7.3 million downloads, and Rihanna, who won four awards including the Top R&B Artist award.

Bruno Mars and his band opened the show with his new single "Treasure".

The legendary singer Prince performed a medley of his classics "Let's Go Crazy," the instrumental of "Frankenstein" and "Fix Ur Life Up." He alsowon the Icon Award for a career that includes 10 platinum albums. .

Chris Brown also performed his new single "Fine China" using Chinese inspired visual elements while he performed a Michael Jackson dance.

Billboard Music Awards' finalists were based on fans' interactions with music, including album and digital singles sales, radio airplay, tour, streaming and social interactions on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, VEVO, Spotify and other popular online platforms for music.

Billboard and its data partners, including Nielsen Entertainment and Next Big Sound, tracked these measurements year-round.

Other artists who attended the award ceremony included Justin Bieber, Miguel, Macklemore& Ryan Lewis, and Selena Gomez.
