American filmmaker Oliver Stone and Hong Kong director Johnny To Kwei Fung discussed the PRISM scandal yesterday at the 16th Shanghai International Film Festival.

They touched on the topic in a panel discussion when an audience member asked if they would be interested in bringing the scandal to the big screen.

Known for his gang and gunfights films, To said he didn’t see anything new in the scandal. "Each moment there is eavesdropping in the world. It is very frequent in America." This particular scandal is only different because whistleblower Edward Snowden chose Hong Kong as his potential haven, To said. “If Hong Kong is involved in troubles because of the issue, I think Hong Kong people will get interested in the event.”

Stone, whose films, like "JFK," have showcased an affinity for conspiracy theories, praised Snowden, calling him a "hero" for exposing the government without harming individual citizens.

Stone denied he would shoot a film on the topic in the near future because he believes films like "Enemy of the States" have already told similar stories.

PRISM is a clandestine electronic surveillance program operated by the U.S. National Security Agency to tap directly into the central servers of nine U.S. internet companies.
