Taiwan screenwriter Hugh K.S. Lee dead at 58

Hugh K.S. Lee, the famous Taiwan screenwriter and Art Director of the Ping-Fong acting troupe, died of colorectal cancer early this morning. He was 58.

The Ping-Fong acting troupe announced Lee's death in a short statement issued this morning. Lee's wife, actress Wang Yue, and their two children were with Lee when he died at 3:34 this morning, according to the statement.

Born on December 30th, 1955, Lee was a renowned troupe founder, actor, director and playwright. He was considered one of the most creative and dynamic persons on the Taiwanese theatrical circle today. He began his career as screenwriter in 1976 and has since published 36 theatrical scripts . He founded the independent stage play acting troupe Ping-Fong in 1986, at the age of 31. Lee was also associate professor with the Graduate Institute of Theatre Performance and Playwriting of Taipei National University of the Arts.

Lee, who was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2010, suspended his performances for treatment in 2012. He remained optimistic and strong during his treatment, saying in one interview that he "had adapted to the co-existence with the cancer."

A Weibo post on his wife's 47th birthday last month, in which Lee wrote "I have nothing but a heart that loves you forever," was 'favorited' 60,000 times.

Lee planned to publish a collection of his scripts on July 8.
