Chinese director Zhang Yimou may unite with popular actress Gong Li in a new film project, QQ.com has reported.

Zhang Zhao, CEO of Le Vision Pictures, speaking at a financial case-study conference for "Tiny Times," implied, that Zhang Yimou will come back to shoot a new film.

"Zhang Yimou will come back during the fourth quarter this year," Zhang Zhao said, "He will shoot a film called 'Return', a Cultural Revolution story."

"He has made commercial films for ten years, and has got fed up. Now he wants to come back to make art house film and collaborate with Gong Li." Gong has been Zhang's long-term collaborator; the two were previously in a relationship with each other, although they later split.

When reporters tried to reach Zhang Zhao, however, he refused to verify the cooperation, saying "I will talk to you later, I'm in the U.S. now."

Zhang Yimou's new film, "Return", is widely anticipated by film-goers. It is an adaption of "The Criminal Lu Yanshi," a novel by Yan Geling. Yan also collaborated with Zhang on the script for "The Flowers of War," a film adaptation of another of her novels, "13 Flowers of Nanjing", which starred Christian Bale.

Zhang Yimou signed up to work with Le Vision Pictures in May for his future films. His partnership with Le Vision will end a previous "chaotic and disorderly cooperation," Zhang himself said at a press conference.

Zhang ended his 16-year partnership with producer Zhan Weiping last year. The two had worked on some of Zhang's highest grossing films, including "Hero", "House of Flying Daggers" and "Curse of the Golden Flower." Their last cooperation was "The Flowers of War" in 2011.
