"One Direction: This is Us" became the biggest winner at North America as it outperformed all its cinematic rivals during the last weekend in August.
The Sony-released 3D concert documentary focusing on the boy band "One Direction" is projected to rake in 17 million U.S. dollars worth of tickets during the Friday-Sunday period.
It will also remain as the top grosser during the four-day Labor Day weekend as it is expected to roll up 20.5 million dollars in ticket sales through Monday.
Playing at 2,735 theaters in the United States and Canada, the film was welcomed both by critics and audience, garnering a 68- percent approval rating from reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and a strong "A" on CinemaScore. It skewed heavily towards female which made up 87 percent of the first night movie-goers. Sixty- five percent of audience was younger than 17 years old.
"Lee Daniels The Butler" trailed with an expected take of 14.7 million dollars. The Weinstein Company-distributed civil rights epic is on track for a 74-million-dollar three-day total.
"We're the Millers" finished at No. 3 with a 12.6-million- dollar weekend. The Warner Bros.-distributed raunchy comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis has raked in more than 100 million dollars over four weeks.
Rounding out the 10 most popular films in North America this weekend, as estimated by studios, were "Planes" (7.7 million dollars), "Instructions Not Included" (debuting at 7.5 million), " Elysium" (6.3 million), "Instruments: City of Bones" (5.2 million), "The World's End" (4.7 million), "Getaway" (4.5 million), and " Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters" (4.4 million).
