'The Smurfs 2' tops Chinese box office charts

American 3D comedy "The Smurfs 2" topped China's box office charts in the week ending Sept. 15, grossing 63 million yuan (10.3 million U.S. dollars), according to Tuesday's China Film News.

The sequel is loosely based on a comic-book series and debuted in Chinese cinemas on Sept. 12.

"Elysium," an American science fiction action-thriller, was second in the charts, taking in 52 million yuan during the week, grossing 127 million yuan since its release on Sept. 5.

"Silent Witness," a Chinese crime thriller, starring Aaron Kwok, Sun Honglei and Yu Nan, was third, taking in 43 million yuan since its debut on Sept. 13.

Romance flick "The Stolen Years" ranked fourth, taking in 22.48 million yuan.

In the week from Sept. 9 to Sept. 15, 7.6 million people visited cinemas nationwide, 4 percent up year on year, while the weekly box office was down 2.4 percent, with a total of 250 million yuan.
