According to the latest reports, the Shanghai Film Group and Seven Stars Entertainment, led by Chairman Bruno Wu, announced in Beijing that they will collaborate with producer Arad in a newly formed joint venture to develop a new superhero franchise project, "Rise of the Terracotta Warriors."

The film is based on an original story by Arad and is inspired by the history and mythology behind China's legendary Terracotta Army sculptures.

Arad is the former CEO of Marvel Entertainment who founded the comic giant's film arm in 1993, which has been behind blockbuster movie franchises such as "Spider-Man" and "Iron Man."

Another collaborator for the terracotta superhero film is the veteran Shanghai Animation Film Studio.

Bruno Wu said the project had entered a "substantive stage," and shooting will begin in May 2014. According to Arad's routine, new superheroes are introduced to the general public through cartoons. "Rise of the Terracotta Warriors" will probably be an animated feature and then have a worldwide release. After that, they will probably produce a live-action feature film.

"'Rise of the Terracotta Warriors' is one of the most important projects we are working on," Shanghai Film Group CEO Ren Zhonglun said, "We have great faith in this collaboration with Avi Arad and look forward to it very much."

The Terracotta Warriors are a massive collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the army of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. They are a form of funerary art, and were buried with the emperor in 210-209 BC in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province.
