Gabriel Garcia Marquez was born in Aracataca, Colombia, on March 6, 1927 and passed away in Mexico City, Mexico, on April 17, 2014.

Known affectionately as Gabo throughout Latin America, Garcia Marquez was a Colombian novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter and journalist.

He wrote many acclaimed works of non-fiction and short stories and is best known for his novels, such as "One Hundred Years of Solitude" (1967), "Autumn of the Patriarch" (1975) and "Love in the Time of Cholera" (1985).

He is considered one of the most significant authors of the 20th century and was awarded the 1972 Neustadt International Prize for Literature and the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature.

He worked as a reporter for many years before dedicating himself to writing fiction and lived in Mexico City since the 1960s. In 1958, he married Mercedes Barcha. They had two sons, Rodrigo and Gonzalo.

"One Hundred Years of Solitude," his masterpiece, was published in 1967. It has been translated into 35 languages and has sold more than 30 million copies.
