The film will be based on Luke Harding's book "The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man," which tells how Snowden leaked evidence of America's global surveillance.

"This is one of the greatest stories of our time," Stone said in a statement. The Telegraph reported that Stone said that making such a film is "a real challenge."

Last month, Sony Pictures Entertainment acquired the big-screen rights to journalist Glenn Greenwald's book "No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA and the U.S. Surveillance State."

James Bond franchise producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli will make the movie version of "No Place to Hide," described as "a political film that will resonate with moviegoers."

Snowden now is living in Russia on a temporary grant of asylum after leaking massive amounts of NSA documents to the media.
