The most-anticipated sci-fi blockbuster "Transformers: Age of Extinction" is selected to be the closing feature at the 17th Shanghai International Film Festival.

Director Michael Bay and leading actor Mark Wahlberg together with Chinese actress Li Bingbing will attend the Chinese premiere of the film on June 21.

As "Transformers 3" grossed 1.098 billion yuan (US$175.79 million) on the Chinese mainland, the biggest overseas market for the "Transformers" franchise, Paramount Pictures paid huge attention to the Chinese audiences and added numerous Chinese elements to the fourth installment.

Not only Chinese actress Li Bingbing, actor/singer Han Geng and Hong Kong actor Ray Lui, as well as four smaller roles, were cast in the films, but the film additionally has one-third of the storyline set in China. The film crews shot multiple scenes in Beijing, Hong Kong, Tianjin and Chongqing, with the help of China's movie channel and its website M1905.com. According to sources, the grand final battle between the alien robots will take place in Hong Kong with a number of dazzling visual effects.

"Transformers: Age of Extinction," which runs for 157 minutes, the longest installment in the franchise, will first hold its Asian premiere in Hong Kong on June 19. The film will hit Chinese screens on June 27, also the worldwide opening day.

Shanghai film fest organizers chose the remake of "Stage Sisters" (1964), by late famous Chinese film director Xie Jin, as the festival’s opening film. The film will be shown in 4K resolution for the first time on the Chinese mainland. 4K stands for ultra-high picture resolution.

The annual Shanghai International Film Festival will run from June 14 to 22.
