Awards bring curtain down on TV festival

A drama set in rural New Zealand won the top TV film mini-series award as the 20th Shanghai Television Festival closed last night at a star-studded ceremony at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.

"Top of the Lake," a co-production involving the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia and the United States, tells of a detective who gets involved in a case of a missing 12-year-old pregnant girl in a town steeped in mystery.

German filmmaker Philipp Kadelbach scooped the best TV film director award for epic series "Generation War."

Domestic family drama "If by Life You Were Deceived" took the golden award for best TV series and Chinese filmmaker Liu Jiang won the best director award for romantic series "Marry Me."

Sun Li won the best actress award for her depiction of an independent mother in "Hot Mom!" while the best actor award went to Wang Zhiwen for his role in "May-December Love."

American drama "Breaking Bad" took the award for best foreign TV series.

Giancarlo Esposito, who played Gus Fring in the drama, collected the award and expressed his gratitude to the city.

"It is the golden age for TV and you are leading the way," he said.
