Police released Taiwan movie star Kai Ko Friday after 14 days of detention for using marijuana.

Speaking at a press conference shortly after his release Ko, also known as Ko Chen-tung, expressed regret over the incident and vowed not to use drugs again.

"I am so sorry. It was all my fault, with no excuse and no reason," said the 23-year-old, bowing to the press conference.

"It was an individual behavior, selfish and stupid."

He later offered a tearful apology for letting down his partners and fans.

On Aug. 14, Beijing police detained multiple people for drug-related offences, including Ko and Jaycee Chan, 32, son of Chinese Kungfu star Jackie Chan. The junior Chan also tested positive for marijuana. Both admitted to taking the drug.

Police seized more than 100 grams of marijuana from Chan's home.

A man surnamed Song was detained the following day for allegedly selling the drug to Chan.

Ko won "best new actor" at the 48th Golden Horse Awards and the 12th Chinese Film Media Awards for his role in the movie "You Are the Apple of My Eye."

Ko's agent Chai Chih-ping apologized at the press conference to the public for the actor's "wayward" behavior and begged for "pardon and tolerance".

Since the beginning of the year, Beijing police have launched the country's largest crackdown on drug use in two decades. More than 1,800 drug crime cases have been investigated, up 53.2 percent from the same period last year. More than 8,400 suspects have been detained, a 78.7-percent year-on-year increase.

Beijing will continue its "zero tolerance" policy on drug-related crimes, said the city's police authorities.

China has launched an intensive crackdown after President Xi Jinping vowed in June to severely punish drug-related offenders and contain the spread of drugs. In Beijing, 11 celebrities have been caught on drug-related charges this year.
