'The Maze Runner' tops N. American box office

Three new movies based on best-selling books debuted this weekend.

The 20th Century Fox's young adult adaptation "The Maze Runner" outpaced the rest with an estimated 32.5 million U.S. dollars in over 3,600 locations in North America.

Led by Dylan O'Brien, "The Maze Runner", the adaptation of James Dashner's post-apocalyptic young adult novel, focused on a group of young people trapped in a deadly world surrounded by a giant maze.

Young audience were attracted by the film and gave it up to 81 percent approval rating on RottenTomatoes.com. The film also got an A-rating on CinemaScore.

"The Maze Runner" grossed over 3.3 million from 351 IMAX locations this weekend, which represented 10.2 percent of this weekend's overall gross.

Liam Neeson's "A Walk Among the Tombstones" debuted in the second place. Based on Lawrence Block's bestselling series of mystery novels, the R-rated film took in 13.1 million dollars in the three-day weekend, according to box office tracker Rentrak.

"A Walk Among the Tombstones" received a lackluster B-rating on CinemaScore and 65 percent approval rating on RottenTomatoes.com. Director Shawn Levy's "This Is Where I Leave You" ranked third with 11.9 million dollars in its opening weekend.

The R-rated modestly budgeted comedy starring Jason Bateman and Tina Fey opened in line with its modest expectations. It got a B+ rating on CinemaScore.

Disney's "Guardians of the Galaxy" grossed an estimated 5.2 million dollars this weekend. The blockbuster sci-fi superhero film from Marvel has taken 313.7 million dollars in 52-day since released, which is set to soon surpass the 318-million-dollar unadjusted final gross of 2008's "Iron Man".

Rounding out the 10 most popular films in North America this weekend were "No Good Deed" (10.2 million dollars), "Dolphin Tale 2" (9 million), "Guardians Of The Galaxy" (5.2 million), "Let's Be Cops" (2.7 million), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (2.6 million), "The Drop" (2 million), "If I Stay" (1.8 million).
