"Boyhood" is a critically acclaimed drama that follows the life of one boy, played by sensitive newcomer Ellar Coltrane. It was filmed over 12 years, providing a unique perspective on the evolution of a family.

The movie also won best director for Linklater and best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.

Although "Boyhood" lost the Golden Bear at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival in early 2014 to the Chinese film "Black Coal, Thin Ice," directed by Diao Yinan, it is now seen as a strong Oscar contender.

"Bottom line is we're all flawed in this world. No one's perfect," Linklater said. "I want to dedicate this to parents that are evolving everywhere and families that are just passing through this world and doing their best."

"The Grand Budapest Hotel" won the Golden Globe for Best Picture in the Musical or Comedy category. Directed by Wes Anderson, the film is a visually sumptuous concoction starring Ralph Fiennes as the pompous concierge of an Eastern European resort between World Wars I and II.
