Argument about the Ice Bucket Challenge
The Ice Bucket Challenge came to China from the United States in August and many Chinese public figures from IT, media, showbiz and sports joined the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise funds for ALS research.
The challenge involves people getting covered with buckets of ice water on video, posting those videos on social media and then nominating others to do the same. Those who refuse to take the challenge are asked to make a donation to the ALS charity, which initiated the game. And many of those who took the challenge donated as well.
However, many people have criticized the campaign for its excessive commercial and entertainment elements, with some netizens complaining that some celebrities are using it for self-promotion. Hong Kong singer G.E.M., for example, was criticized for causing something of a sensation because her shirt became almost see-through after she was drenched with ice water. And Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi Technology, received netizens' flak for combining his act of charity with business promotion - Lei followed up the Ice Bucket Challenge with a lengthy description about his company and its products.
