'Little Apple,' viral song of the year
"Little Apple," a catchy pop song, went viral on the Internet and Chinese square dancing venues immediately after its release in May this year.
Performed by the pop duo Chopsticks Brothers, its repetitive rhythm, easy-to-remember lyrics, simple and funny dance and, most importantly, grassroots nature, got it more than one billion hits on China's major video websites. The song was also liked and mimicked by many young people, and is extremely popular among old people who take part in square dancing all around China.
It was initially a promotional song for the movie "Old Boys: The Way of the Dragon," but its impact went beyond that in China, much like the phenomenal effect caused by "Gangnam Style" by the South Korean musician Psy in 2012.
It even won the AMA International Song Award in November in 2014 and the duo performed the song at the 2014 American Music Awards in Los Angeles where Jason Zhang (Zhang Jie) also walked away with the International Artist Award. But their appearances at the American Music Awards were not broadcast live, making many Chinese and foreign critics wonder what the point was of them getting on stage. Some Internet users also questioned whether the awards were bought by PR money, or whether the organizers of the awards treated Chinese people seriously.
