 Run Run Shaw's passes away

Hong Kong media mogul and philanthropist Run Run Shaw passed away at the age of 107 on Jan. 7 at his home in Hong Kong.

Born in 1907 in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province in China, Shaw was Hong Kong's renowned film producer, entertainment industry tycoon and philanthropist. He established the Shaw Brothers film studio in 1958 in the city and produced more than 1,000 Chinese language films.

Shaw was one of the founding directors of TVB in 1967 and executive chairman for 30 years. With his vision and energy, he built the company into Hong Kong's premier television station. He retired as chairman of the company at the age of 104.

Shaw was enthusiastic about charity and donated more than 10 billion HK dollars (about US$1.29 billion), with a large sum going to supporting education on the Chinese mainland. Shaw also set up the Shaw Prize, known as the Nobel Prize of the East, in 2003 to commend outstanding scientists in the world.

Besides Shaw, Robin Williams, "Monkey King" master actor Zhang Zongyi (Liu Lingtong), directors Wu Tianming, Lin Bai, Lu Xuechang, and actors Ken Takakura, Shirley Temple and Philip Seymour Hoffman were also greatly mourned by Chinese people, who were thankful for the joy and entertainment they brought to the world.
