The Emptiness

The Emptiness is the title of Chen's painting and his short film. Her three paintings try to explain the past, present, and future from Buddhist standpoint on life. A wave of water can be seen in the painting and water is also an symbol in Zen philosophy, used to represent flow and emptiness.

This 8-mins film was interesting, although difficult to understand, for the audiences without a background knowledge about the meaning of "emptiness" in Buddhist philosophy. By combining images of cities, streets, campuses, cats, water, clouds, and mountains with Japanese and Italian music, it offers audiences the chance to grasp the meaning of "emptiness". It has been defined in Buddhist wisdom as follows:

"Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one."

"Enlightenment for a wave in the ocean is the moment the wave realizes it is water."

While talking about the process of production, Chen said it's rather simple, for simplicity may be the best way to reflect "emptiness". Chen has been living and studying art in Italy for four years, he is currently studying an MA in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera, Milan, Italy. His art works have been shown in Transizioni arte poesia, and Contaminazionireciproche, in 'Casa delle culture del mondo' Milan.
