"I will not make any excuses for myself," Zhang said in court. "Ever since I was detained, I have been reflecting on this mistake every day. I will never make this mistake again in the future, and will compensate my family and anyone who cares about me and all of society for what I did and what I hurt."

The 33-year-old actor was tried in Haidian District Court in Beijing.

According to police evidence presented by prosecutors, several friends smoked marijuana with Zhang as early as April 2014. Zhang smoked marijuana again in June when he went to Sichuan with another friend. On July 29, he smoked marijuana at a friend’s house but was captured by the police, who were alerted by informants.

Zhang admitted to police that he has allowed others to take drugs in addition to confessing that he himself took drugs.

He was formally charged one month later with the crime of sheltering others taking drugs after testing positive for marijuana.

This is the second time that Zhang had been charged with drug offenses. He was detained for 13 days for taking drugs at his villa in Shunyi District in Beijing on Jan. 31, 2012.

According to Chinese law, the maximum sentence for Zhang’s crime is three years in prison and a fine.
