Ed Sheeran has won best British male at the opening of the 2015 Brit Awards.

The show is currently underway at London's O2 arena, and Sheeran is going head-to-head with soul singer Sam Smith for most of the main prizes.

Sheeran is also up for best single, best video and best album.

Smith, who took home four Grammys earlier this month, is also in the running for those prizes - as well as best breakthrough artist.

Taylor Swift opened the event, playing her hit single 'Blank Space'.

She went on to win best international female, her first award after eight years of releasing records in the UK.

Paloma Faith won best British female, while Brighton rock duo Royal Blood were presented with best British Group by rock legend Jimmy Page.
