'Furious 7' rules China's box office with record opening

"Furious 7" raced ahead of competitors in China's box office with a record opening of 401 million yuan (about 65.4 million U.S. dollars) in ticket sales in the week ending April 12.

Though it was released on the last day of the week, the seventh film in the stunt-filled "Fast and Furious" street-racing franchise easily beat all rivals and roared to weekly dominance.

Domestic action film "Wolf Warriors", which debuted April 2, was a respectable No. 2 with 227 million yuan in the week, China Film News reported on Wednesday. The film raked in a total of 439.8 million yuan as of April 12.

Domestic romance "Let's Get Married," which debuted the same day as "Wolf Warriors," landed in the third place, pulling in 125 million yuan in the week. Its total box office stood at 273 million yuan at the end of the week.

The fourth spot went to English director Matthew Vaughn's action-fantasy "Kingsman: The Secret Service," with 118 million yuan. The total box office of the film, which opened on March 27, reached 470 million yuan on April 12.

Rounding out the top five was "The House of Magic," which earned 20.5 million yuan in the week. The total box office of the animated adventure stood at 39.5 million yuan on April 12 after its opening in Chinese theaters on April 4.
