'Fun Home' wins best musical of Tony Award 2015

Fun Home, a new Broadway musical based on Alison Bechdel's graphic novel, became a big winner of Sunday's Tony Award by nabbing the Best Musical and four other awards.

The show took home accolades for Best Musical, Score, Book, Lead Actor and Director, and also earned the honor of becoming the first all-female creative team, led by composer Jeanine Tesori and lyricist/librettist Lisa Kron, to win the top prize.
Fun Home introduces Bechdel to the audience at her three different ages, revealing memories of her uniquely dysfunctional family -- her mother, brothers and volatile, brilliant, enigmatic father -- that connected with her in surprising new ways.
The theatrical experience was intimate and emotional, which was performed entirely in the round, and brought the audience closer to Bechdel's story than ever before, said the musical's official website.
In the play categories of the award, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time came out ahead, also with five wins for Best Play, Lead Actor, Director, Scenic Design and Lighting Design.
The play tells the story of a 15-year-old boy, Christopher, who has an extraordinary brain and is exceptionally intelligent but ill-equipped to interpret daily life.
When falling under suspicion of killing his neighbor's dog, he set out to identify the true culprit, which led to an earth-shattering discovery and a journey that would change his life forever.
An American in Paris, The King and I also made strong showings with four awards each.
The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Theatre, more commonly known as the Tony Award, recognizes achievements in live Broadway theaters.
The awards are presented by the American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League at an annual ceremony in New York City.
